Eastern State Penitentiary is located in Philadelphia. It was operational from 1829 until 1971. When the building was erected it was the largest and most expensive public structure ever constructed, quickly becoming a model for more than 300 prisons worldwide. I found it to be quite depressing.

The many layers of paint, time and the very purpose of the building would create a depressing emotion!

The peeling paint and the very nature of a prison helps make this place depressing and forbidding...even to visit. Nice shot of its present condition.

A textural feast for the eyes and camera. I find the concept of prisons depressing, even if they are a necessity.
