The Eye of God

Posted by
Elaine Hancock (Olney, United States) on 28 August 2012 in Miscellaneous.

Inmates lived in total solitude within the ominous fortress and their only glimpse of sunlight, known as “The Eye of God” came through a slit in the ceiling. Inmates had a toilet, table, bunk and Bible in their cells where they were locked all but one hour a day.

"There are moments when time stands still. You hope it will wait for you."
Dorothea Lange

You've really captured the solitary feel of this cell.... most depressing, for sure! Imagine if you were innocent and you were put in this dungeon! A scary place to be! A fantastic photo!

Solitary and somber mood with the deteriorating walls ... great photo! Is this the Eastern State Penitentiary?

28 Aug 2012 3:50pm

@RBL: Yes. I visited there when I went to Philadelphia. There are a few more pictures to follow.

Florence from Paris, France

Truly decayed. That's very moving I think, even if the people who stay here were evils, it's really a tiny place with no sun light.

A great angle for the shot. Gives a real feel of the solitude. The textures in this image are very graphic also.
