Turkey Vultures

Posted by
Elaine Hancock (Olney, United States) on 25 July 2013 in Animal & Insect.

Also known as the turkey buzzard. It was quite an overcast and dreary day. These buzzards really seemed to add to the mood.

I always see vultures as such sinister birds........

25 Jul 2013 6:51am

@Nigel: I agree. I don't see them very often. They tend to like certain areas and all flock there. I guess I should be thankful!

Yep, vultures tend to do - vultures and crowd are my favorite birds just for that reason. Nice shot of them, Elaine!

i like the scene
people always hate or dislike the buzzards but the never hunt and usually eat those who are sick, about to die and corpse. they help the survival of the fittest principle and make the nature clean

I'm impressed with the capture of these birds. Great moment to get the bird's wings spread and the other vulture making an attractive silhouette.

Near to where I live, turkey vultures inhabit in droves (next to the county workhouse). They are some of the ugliest birds around. Great capture of the wings out - shows how big they are.

@Ruthiebear: We don't have too many around here but I know in certain places in Virginia, they are a big problem.

Whoa! I am always surprised by the vulture's wingspan which is illustrated perfectly here. I can't help but think of Hitchcock's movie, "The Birds."

I particularly like the one with the extended wings.

I love the open feel to this countryside scene. I like the hay, and I like the vultures. (hey...they serve an important part of the cycle of life). :)
