Shared Moments

Posted by
Elaine Hancock (Olney, United States) on 11 February 2014 in People & Portrait.

One of my goals this year is to work on taking more photos of people. It is something that I have always wanted to do but find somewhat intimidating.

"There are moments when time stands still. You hope it will wait for you."

RBL from Oxford, United States

Wonderful candid shot! Great for you to make this a goal! I find it difficult too; we were at the boys show this past weekend; a woman came up to me and said that I am not allowed to post any photos of any audience members from the venue on-line or I will be sued; I felt quit threatened but I also did appreciate her coming to me before the show started before I did decide to take crowd photos ... oh well! Band shots only ... lol :) I guess it comes with carrying around a camera :)

11 Feb 2014 7:33pm

@RBL: I have never heard of that before. I know that in the hospital where I worked you could not take pictures due to patient privacy issues but at a public event, that seems a little extreme. I guess someone could be sued if they did not want their picture posted somewhere.

Gary from The Southwest Deserts, United States

Basile Pesso from Barcelona, Spain

Yes, what Ruthie L says is right...it's image rights' law.
We are used to doing it (amateurs especially really don't know this rule). Even the pro world is touched by that. I know it's hard to accept for all those who think it's a normal thing to post faces of people without asking them, and I absolutely don't judge here, I just tell about the legal point.
The existence of this point prevents things from being too inappropriate in the broadcasting of people in public places ; otherwise there would be a lot of very ugly pictures without dignity of people who don't know they've been taken. Of course almost all the pictures with recognizable faces of people who don't know they've been taken that we see on Aminus are pictures with aesthetic qualities but I see thins on other places that frighten me...actually I think that an international photo platform should recall to users about this primordial rule, not to scare and restrain them but so that we all have the basis of the "game" in mind :-)

@Basile Pesso: Hi Basile, Thanks a lot for the information. It gives me a lot to think about and whether I should try and take pictures of people. I appreciate the time you took to write this.
