B&O Railroad Train Tunnel

Posted by
Elaine Hancock (Olney, United States) on 14 November 2015 in Transportation.

The original tunnel was built in 1894 but it only accommodated one set of tracks. The tunnel was widened in conjunction with the construction of the second bridge in 1931. Looking down from the bridge, you can see the ruins of two previous bridges. Parts of these bridges were destroyed during the Civil War.

"There are moments when time stands still. You hope it will wait for you."

I'm just a little concerned about what you are standing on to get this excellent viewpoint :)

@grouser: Me too! It was the grated metal stairs going down under the bridge where the path continued, but I was sort of hanging over the railing. Looking down all I could see was how high I was and the ground way below. It made me nervous!
