Renwick Gates

Posted by
Elaine Hancock (Olney, United States) on 27 April 2017 in Art & Design.

The cast iron carriage gates at the Independence Avenue entrance to the Enid A. Haupt Garden were based on an 1849 drawing by James Renwick, Jr., architect of the Smithsonian Institution Castle.

Looking at these gates, are so much like gates built in this style in England. The red stonework is just magnificent, and are in superb condition. I really like this image. 5*

Just had a look back at this batch of posts from the Smithsonian and I'm struck by the awesome levels of colour saturation, contrast, and local sharpness. These really "pop" and are right up my street.

I like the rich colour here though I'm a bit worried about the earth's tilt :)

@grouser: I know! I was actually sitting in a wheelchair and just could not get it quite right! I probably should have taken the picture straight on instead of at an angle.
