Bonsai

Posted by
Elaine Hancock (Olney, United States) on 11 June 2017 in People & Portrait.

My younger son has a green thumb and likes to garden. So did my father, but it skipped a generation with me. I tend to over water everything and kill it. We went to a residence where an 86 year old man has been growing bonsai trees for over 40 years. Some of these miniature trees were amazing! There was a large variety of different trees that were various ages, the average being about 32 years old. My favorite was the maple tree. I bought my son a tree for his birthday. He now has 4 bonsai trees.

A wonderful image of this man looking after his bonsai trees. Although I love gardening, I do not know much about keeping one of these trees. I do know they are hard to grow, so your son must be an expert growing them. A very interesting image Elaine.

A tree for a birthday gift is a great idea. Over watering sounds like my experience. :-)

My father in law liked to grow bonsai's. The ones in this image look bigger than anything he attempted. I love this portrait of the gardener.

@Ruthiebear: This was probably a little misleading. He is just standing among some bushes. I have bonsai pictures tomorrow.

I grew bonsai too, at one time I had over thirty trees of about five years old, then lost them all in a frightful late spring frost. My own fault, I should have brought them all indoors.

@Curly: That is so sad. They take a lot of time and care. This gardener puts them all in the ground every fall and then digs them up in the spring. I thought that was rather interesting a lot of work.

I always thought bonsai trees were small and container based, so I am surprised to see one the size of the man (or is he a miniature?).
