The Charles Mercer taking a slow ride up the C&O Canal. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal was originally built to carry coal from the Allegheny Mountains to Washington, DC. Mules walked along the towpath beside the canal and pulled boats loaded with coal. Today, the canal is a recreation area. The towpath is a walking path. Parts of the canal can be used for canoeing.
