Edwards Ferry Lockhouse

Posted by Elaine Hancock (Olney, United States) on 25 September 2017 in Architecture.

Edwards Ferry Lockhouse is located at lock 25 along the C&O canal and is adjacent to the Potomac River. The house was completed in 1830. The lockhouse was home for the lock master who controlled the canal lock. The C&O Canal had 75 locks. The boatmen along the Potomac River called Edwards Ferry "Haunted House Bend". They reported hearing strange noises, including blood-curdling screams and moans. They'd say mules passing through became restless and spooked.

"There are moments when time stands still. You hope it will wait for you."

How did it feel to you? :) A nicely textural doc shot

@grouser: The woods behind the house were very dark. I was there in the late afternoon. Not sure that I would want to be out there at night!

Impressive building and I loved the story. Did you hear any strange noises? Did the hair on your neck stand up?

@beach: I was there in the late afternoon. It is in a very isolated area. There were people fishing along the river. The woods look very dark. I would not want to be down there at night!

What a great old building, complete with ghosts. You should investigate more on this place Elaine. A wonderful capture. 5*

@Shaun: It is popular to ride a mountain bike down the entire length of the C&O Canal which is 186 miles. This is one of 5 lock houses that you can stay in over night. It is basically a room with beds that you can put your sleeping bag on. Now after reading about it's history, I am not sure that I would want to stay in this one!

It's an interesting size for a live-in lock person. The mystery noises adds to the picture enjoyment.
