Emory Lane Farmhouse

Posted by
Elaine Hancock (Olney, United States) on 5 September 2018 in Architecture.

This house was built in 1830. It sat empty for a long time and the property was recently sold. The old house has a lot of character but I am sure that since it was sold, it will eventually be torn down.

That looks to have a few stories to tell . . I'd like to see it restored, but . .

You have really captured the character of this old property, Elaine. I hope the new owner restores it.

Beautiful atmosphere on this picture.
We would obviously like these old houses of character to be restored and not bought or left in the hands of egens who come to recover old fireplaces, century old beams etc ...

The tear down culture of North America/Canada is one of the disturbing things I noticed there. I lived in Canada for a while and loved the unspoilt wilderness, but found I profoundly missed the sense of history that the European landscape has imprinted on it. Everything human seemed to have been created in the last 25 years as though there was a conscious effort to erase history. This is a lovely home which you capture beautifully and it deserves care and thoughtful renovation not destruction.

@grouser: I totally agree with you. Everyone wants something newer and bigger (and poorly constructed). There are a lot of neighborhoods in my area where every other old house seems to be bought, torn down and replaced with some cheaply made house that looks like every other house. They have no character and no history. That is something that attracted me so much to Europe. There is pride in something with history and character and no interest in tearing it down.

I think Grousers comments on this house say's it all. I can only hope that the new owner of this house will try and renovate it as it should be. Your picture of this house is magnificent. 5*

I am so disappointed when I see places like this torn down. WHat a grand house this was. I love this point of view and the details you have brought out.

I'm with Grouser on this topic, and as a proud Canadian in general I still find it disheartening when I see so little effort made to preserve our heritage in such a young country, or to build new structures with a sense of pride and longevity. This house has charm galore and I'm glad you preserved its memory with a very fine photo. Excellent light, shooting angle.

@Rick: Thanks a lot Rick. I totally agree with Grouser also.

A fine picture of the old house. The several fuel barrels suggests the house was not well insulated.

The people who lived there were prepared for cold winters with three fuel oil tanks out back.

Before I read your comment I was thinking that old houses like this have so much character. I bet is was so special to the first owner so long ago.

Looks like fireplaces were important back in the day. If it is torn down, I can only hope something with character is built in its place. :-)

An excellent photo of this beautiful house. I wish the new owners to restore it well.

(I don't have time lately, I hardly come here. I'm sorry. Regards Elaine.)
