Climbing El Capitan

Posted by
Elaine Hancock (Olney, United States) on 16 October 2018 in Landscape & Rural.

The shortest record to rock climb El Capitan is just under 2 1/2 hours, but the average time is 3 to 5 days. If you look just to the right of center, under the shadow where it resembles a triangle, there are 2 climbers at the lower tip of the triangle. And then up above the triangle and to the left there is one more. It looks like a red dot.

"There are moments when time stands still. You hope it will wait for you."

It takes a specially brave person to climb mountains and rocks. A very dangerous pastime. This is a great image of the challenges they face. 5*

That is a daunting rock face. I much prefer my feet on level ground. I think I see the climbers, but I still have sleep in my eyes and I haven't had my coffee yet!

@Lewis: I totally agree with that!

I read the book Death in Yosemite. It sounds grim, but after I picked it up in a bookstore, I couldn't put it down. All of the stories of people who fell from El Capitan are amazing. We enjoyed watching climbers make their way up when we were there.

@B. Thomas: I will definitely have to check out this book.

Steve Rice from Olympia, United States

I see them! I just saw an interview with Alex Honnold who free climbed that rock face with no ropes or protective gear. He spent more than a year practicing, with ropes, different sections until he got them perfect. He did it in 3 hours and 56 minutes.

16 Oct 2018 11:12pm

@Steve Rice: That is amazing. I cannot imagine getting up the face of this mountain that fast but it has been done. And to free climb it is totally unbelievable! I saw a segment about him on 60 Minutes. It was incredible!
