White's Ferry

Posted by
Elaine Hancock (Olney, United States) on 12 February 2019 in Transportation.

White's Ferry is the last of at least 100 ferries that crossed the Potomac River. It started service in 1817. Today White's Ferry runs continuously from 5 AM until 11 PM daily unless major flooding occurs or there is increased debris or ice. The ferry can hold a maximum of 24 cars in a single trip and takes under 2 minutes to load, 5 minutes to cross, and another 2 minutes to unload, depending on traffic and the height of the river.

"There are moments when time stands still. You hope it will wait for you."
Dorothea Lange

An interesting background story to this great capture! The trees make a great backdrop against the sky. Given its minimalistic design, I am surprised that it can carry 24 vehicles.

A fine picture of this old, but active ferry. It’s still serving the public. I wonder for how long?

Nice processing for this timeless image. The ferry may not be high tech or modern but seems to get the job done.

12 Feb 2019 9:03pm

@B. Thomas: I always enjoy taking it across the river. It just has this old time feel.

Steve Rice from Olympia, United States

I would prefer to cross on a fine summer day without ice or high water. ;-) Cool shot.
