During the Civil War, the Arnold Farm became a staging area for Union Troops as they prepared to ascend South Mountain and push the Confederate troops back. Sharpshooters used the farm's large bank barn for cover. The house may have also been used to shelter wounded soldiers in the weeks after the battle.
