Turning Yellow for Spring

Posted by
Elaine Hancock (Olney, United States) on 12 February 2024 in Animal & Insect.

Every summer, goldfinches replace their bright yellow feathers with duller brown ones for the winter. The new feathers come in one by one, giving the birds a strange patchwork appearance. Unlike most songbirds, goldfinches molt twice a year. At the end of winter, they'll grow in a complete set of new golden yellow feathers for mating season.

"There are moments when time stands still. You hope it will wait for you."

Coucou Elaine,
Je suis toujours fascinée de voir des oiseaux génétiquement jusque dans leur genre et tellement différent en couleurs.
Il est très beau et j'ai bien son attitude à regarder au loin.
Bravo pour cette photo.
Très belle et douce journée à toi.

The European goldfinch have red on the head and yellow only on the feathers.
Nice capture.

12 Feb 2024 6:19pm

@Jean-Luc.M: I think that the European Goldfinch and the Robin are so much prettier than the ones here.

Mhelene from Villiers-sur-Marne, France

Very nice photo! I did not know they changed their color ! Thank you for the information.

12 Feb 2024 7:51pm

@Mhelene: For the longest time I thought that the Gold Finch migrated elsewhere in winter. Once I got interested in birds, I was reading about them and found out that they stayed here all winter. But I never saw any until I read about them taking on a more brown appearance in winter.

Great bird shot as always.

Interesting information about these birds. Lovely photo too, Elaine. That change in colour is visible very well. We have a budgie and she is shedding feathers left, right, and centre, at the moment.
