Every summer, goldfinches replace their bright yellow feathers with duller brown ones for the winter. The new feathers come in one by one, giving the birds a strange patchwork appearance. Unlike most songbirds, goldfinches molt twice a year. At the end of winter, they'll grow in a complete set of new golden yellow feathers for mating season.

@Mhelene: For the longest time I thought that the Gold Finch migrated elsewhere in winter. Once I got interested in birds, I was reading about them and found out that they stayed here all winter. But I never saw any until I read about them taking on a more brown appearance in winter.
